Reading: We will be honing our reading skills by looking at specific strategies that more advanced readers use with fiction and nonfiction books, for example: summarizing, making inferences and understanding the author’s purpose.
Math: This year we will be focusing on math topics in greater depth using Math in Focus. This math program provides an authentic Singapore math curriculum—highlighting problem solving as the focus of mathematical learning. This complete program teaches concepts using a concrete–pictorial–abstract learning progression to anchor learning in real-world, hands-on experiences, supported by the integration of technology.
Writing: The writing portion of our curriculum will focus not only on students’ own experiences and individual writing development, but also on nonfiction writing that will be used in further academic pursuits.
Social Studies: Social Studies also builds on last year’s concepts, including civil values, economics, geography, government and key historical events in the United States.
Science: One major curricular change from first grade comes in the form of our science units, which are more hands on and inquiry based. We will study three main topics using a scientific inquiry approach: air and weather, plants, and health. In addition, we will use MySci materials to learn about animals.
